Kylie Fox teams up with filmmaker Jillian Acreman to create the video for Horny and Bored, the latest single off of her debut album, Green.
Horny and Bored is the latest single from Kylie Fox’s 2020 debut full-length album, Green. Backed by a video featuring Fox wandering the city alone in an oversized T-Rex suit, Horny and Bored sums up much of the past year in it’s loneliness and self made humour.
“What exhibits isolation more than being the only dinosaur left in your city?”, says Fox on her choice of pairing this song’s moody overtone with the hilarity of an oversized T-Rex suit.
The video concept came together through discussions with Fredericton filmmaker Jillian Acreman (Queen of the Andes) who worked with Fox on this project. “We stewed over a few different concepts during production meetings before this idea sparked interest in both of us,” said Fox. “My job was mostly walking around Fredericton in a T-Rex costume. Jill had the cinematic vision. I think everyone needs a good laugh right now.”
For this project, Acreman took a decidedly low-fi approach shooting primarily using a camcorder. The resulting grainy imagery works to enhance the isolated storyline while giving a fresh retro energy to the finished work.
“I went into production feeling particularly inspired by that 90s/publicly improvised/Fatboy Slim energy. I always responded to his work, and it seemed like a fun jumping off point,” said Acreman. “Kylie had a little anonymity, but it’s humbling to walk around our small city with a dinosaur, directing her to do increasingly ridiculous things. We had a blast, and were definitely our own audience.”
Filming for this project began in November before the second and third wave of COVID-19 put a hold on the production process. Over the summer, they were finally able to finish shooting with Kylie’s band at Shiftwork Studios (Fredericton, NB) to create this “high brow” piece of art.
“We shot the dinosaur footage on a camcorder, and the band footage eight months later on a Blackagic,” said Acreman. “These two mediums are visually distinct and we were aiming for visual continuity in editing. I think the lo-fi feeling connected with all of our footage, as well as the song itself.”
Fox’s album Green,(2020) was produced and recorded by Dale Murray in 2019, funded in part by the New Brunswick Music Association.
