Monday
Monday Night Film Series: Marriage Story
Revisiting some of the themes that made his Oscar-nominated TIFF 2005 selection The Squid and the Whale so resonant, writer-director Noah Baumbach digs deep into divorce with Marriage Story. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver some of their richest work as a couple whose once enviable union crumbles under the weight of mounting resentments and divergent needs.

Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Dylan Ward hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Wednesday
The Jim Cuddy Band with Old Man Luedecke at the Playhouse. Canada’s fan favourite, Jim Cuddy, is hitting the road with his Countrywide Soul Tour. As one of the members of Blue Rodeo, Jim has one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian music, thanks to hits such as “Try,” “5 Days in May,” and “Bad Timing.” After an extensive tour in support of their album, Constellation, The Jim Cuddy Band reconvened at Jim’s family farm in Southern Ontario. Inspired by their live show, he wanted to capture this energy on a new record and showcase each member’s skill — allowing them to stretch out and shine. 7:30 p.m.
MusicUNB Concert: Quartet for the End of Time in Memorial Hall. Eight paintings for eight movements. Surrounded by Stephen Hutchings’ paintings, musicians Nadia Francavilla (violin), Richard Hornsby (clarinet), Paul Pulford (cello), and Carl Gionet (piano) will perform the landmark chamber work, Quartet for the End of Time, written while composer Olivier Messiaen was imprisoned in a WWII concentration camp. A pre-concert talk with artist Stephen Hutchings will introduce you to the music and provide insight into the concert. Concert pre-talk starts at 6:45 p.m.
Fredericton (Poetry) Slam at The Tipsy Muse Café. Fredericton Slam – January edition is on January 15th at the Tipsy Muse, 7 to 9. Come learn how to do competitive poetry slam, participate in the open mic, or simply enjoy an evening of creativity. Sign up will be on site and this is a FREE event, though donations are strongly encouraged. 7 p.m.
Thursday
FROSTival 2020 Begins!Don’t hibernate! Celebrate with Atlantic Canada’s largest winter celebration. FROSTival 2020 will take place over three jam-packed weekends of winter festivities. The full list of events can be found at www.FROSTival.ca
Beyond The Script – TNB Young Company Celebrates 45 Years. As part of Theatre New Brunswick’s ongoing conversation series Beyond The Script, the first event of 2020 will focus on the 45 year history of TNB Young Company with guests Ilkay Silk, Tania Breen and Philip Sexsmith. This event is free and will take place in the Chickadee Room at the Fredericton Public Library between 7:30-8:30 p.m. All welcome.
Dana Dickeson at York County Cider. Come join Dana for an acoustic tribute set to the music of John Prine. Prine will receive the lifetime music award at the Grammy’s in April, let’s celebrate this great artist’s music. Special guest Kim Kloud will be joining in for some duets! 7 p.m.
Friday
Lansdown Concert Series presents Apryll Aileen at 41 River Front Way. Apryll Aileen, a native of Saint John, has lived all over the province but currently resides in Rothesay. She is an alternative pop-rock singer/songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist, and is classically trained in piano. Her sultry vocals, captivating lyrics and alluring stage presence make Apryll a fan favourite at music festivals worldwide. She transcends genres, creating her own indefinable sound with influences coming from pop, rock, blues and jazz; she doesn’t imitate…she creates. The cost is $20 at the door. 86&8 + Heat $heets at The Capital. Stop by The Capital on Friday for a rock filled night with two of the city’s emerging noise makers. 10 p.m.
Chamber Music Recital with Karin Aurell & Martin Kutnowski in Recital Hall (McCain Hall). Karin Aurell and Martin Kutnowski are presenting a chamber music recital featuring original compositions for flute and piano. Admission is free! 7 p.m.
Ethan Ash at The Tipsy Muse Café. Hot Toast Records and Mark Burnett proudly present British recording artist Ethan Ash like you’ve never seen him before! Enjoy an intimate evening of music and story with this Apple Music and CBC favourite as part of Frostival in Fredericton. 7:30 p.m.
Tentacle Tribe’s Ghost at The Playhouse. In this new work, Tentacle Tribe combines elements of contemporary dance, street dance and martial arts in a physical score that echoes the subtle pulse of respiration. The interconnected bodies form striking human structures that shift, alter, evolve in synergy with the music. The invigorating power of the breath and its circulation in the organism is embodied and magnified by the energetic, almost architectural dance. Six of Montreal’s best street dancers immerse themselves in the mysterious mechanics of breathing – interpreting its life-giving rhythm. 7:30 p.m.
An Evening with Cathy Hutch Trio at Grimross Brewing Co. Cathy Hutch has recorded a new album; one that is gaining accolades from all over the globe, and rave reviews from respected music critics and bloggers alike. Her album, titled Free Wheelin’, is a glorious blend of blues and rock, but it’s hard to pin any kind of label on Hutch’s music because it changes from one song to the next. This latest endeavour was produced in PEI and Saint John by industry guru Paul Milner, and features top Canadian talent such as Geoff Arsenault (drums), Chris Corrigan (electric and flat top guitars), Colton Craft (keyboards), as well as Cathy and her own band both instrumentally and vocally. 8 p.m.
Tracing the Space of the Refugee Crisis Opening Reception in the UNB Art Centre. Tracing the Space of the Refugee Crisis incites reflection on issues related to the 2015 European refugee crisis. It traces the emotion elicited by some of the spaces in which people have sought refuge, as it critically interrogates prevailing representational imagery of the crisis. This exhibition is being jointly presented by the UNB Art Centre, from January 17 to February 14, and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery from January 14 to February 7. Images from the series are on display in the East Gallery at the UNB Art Centre and the Bruno Bobak Artist-in-Residence studio located on the lower level of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. The exhibition also features a documentary film titled Trace (running time: 74 minutes) in the West Gallery at the UNB Art Centre. 7 p.m.
Saturday
New Brunswick Country Showcase at The Playhouse. Join us as we proudly salute the Canadian Armed Forces with a Military Appreciation Show featuring Elvis Beaulieu, Todd & Penny McGuire, The Martin Boys, Steve Knox, Cathy Hutch, Riley Taylor, Grace Morgan, Linda Lee, Harmonix and the Showcase Band. 7:30 p.m.
Hip Hop Night at The Capital. Aubrey Brizzle Borden and Stack Loot Divide (Nova Scotia) join a host of NB artists for a memorable night of beats and rhymes. 11 p.m.
Celtic Jam Session at The Tipsy Muse Café. Come and hang out – join in with your instruments or sit back with a drink and treat and enjoy the room filled with tunes. Musicians from around the province gather once a month to share cleltic music from all corners of the world. Fiddles, whistles, guitars, pianos, accordions….dancers! 2-5 p.m.
The Motorleague at The Tipsy Muse Café. Moncton rock staples The Motorleague return to Fredericton’s Tipsy Muse Café for a softer-than-usual performance to help celebrate the café’s one year anniversary. 7 p.m.
Just A Little Light at Wilser’s Room. Fredericton’s best (and only) tribute to The Grateful Dead returns to the Wilser’s stage for an evening
Brick House Babes Presents: Burrr-Lesque at The Phoenix. The sensational seasonal search for Fredericton’s hottest drag enter-taint-her is back with a winter competition to crown the next Brick House Babe. 10 p.m.
East Coast Vogue – A FROSTival Fashion Show at Grimross Brewing Co. Come see some of Fredericton’s finest fashion designers strut their works on the Grimross Brewing runway. Sip some brew while you shop, support local artists, catch a glimpse of the slow fashion industry and watch a truly unique array of collections all in one evening. 9 p.m.
