The sixth annual Fundy Fringe Festival is now underway in Uptown Saint John.
Saint John’s sixth annual Fundy Fringe Festival is now underway. With some 100+ performances from 20 unique acts collectively involving more than 30 performers in total, now might be a good time to familiarize yourself with what exactly a fringe festival is all about because over the coming week, Uptown Saint John will be all-fringe all the time.
So, what’s this festival all about? In short, fringe festivals are all about making theatre and live performances accessible in a way that supports both the artists and the audience. Artists get to perform their work through a week of programming and audiences get to experience a wealth of variety without the costs commonly associated with a typical theatre show. The performances involve minimal infrastructure which helps keep costs down while at the same time, making shows highly adaptable to a wide range of stages.
At this year’s Fundy Fringe Festival, all performances are $10 and with a festival pass, those particularly keen on taking in as much as they can can access eight shows for only $60. How’s that for accessible?
This year’s Fundy Fringe Festival features one of the most diverse lineups in the event’s six year history with performances in improv, comedy, dance, drama, magic, and storytelling with performers from across the province, the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario, the United States and France all making their way to the port city for a week of performances.
There will also be public workshops in stage combat, stilt walking, writing and onstage performance as well as nightly add-on events as part of Fringe: Off The Clock. These include open mic comedy, movie nights and an arts and culture walk through the city’s Uptown district.
