The latest project from Fredericton musician Oscar Tecu was inspired by his weakness for “cheesy love music”.
“Sweet Bay is a love song,” says Chillteens’ Oscar Tecu. “Love isn’t easy. It takes a lot of work. Take advantage of it while it lasts and be grateful of ones who love you.”
Sweet Bay is the first single from Chillteens’ debut album, Sweet Songs, planned for release in June.
“Sweet Songs are tunes I’ve been slowly putting together for the last couple of years but finally decided to record them last year in the fall,” said Tecu. “The songs are heavily influenced by the Zelda Ocarina of Time soundtrack. I can’t get enough of that shit. It’s actually very beautiful music with arrangements and chord progressions that just blow my mind.”
Chillteens is a major shift from Tecu’s last ensemble, Nuages, who released their debut back in February of 2016. For this project, he also credits Latin American singer Luis Miguel, The Everywheres, Kurt Inder, and Mac Demarco for helping inspire his recent writing.
“Most of the songs on the album are love songs about people, places and memories,” said Tecu. “When I was a kid I grew up listening to a lot of pop and cheesy love music because of my mom, and I remember liking it but how embarrassed I was because I was so into it. It wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I decided to embrace that side of myself.”
Chillteens will celebrate the release of Sweet Songs with an album release show, June 1 at The Capital Complex in Fredericton.
