CHRISS OFF! – Grateful Dawn of the Neuron Moon
Here’s an album that succeeds in sounding nothing like anything else. Grateful Dawn of the Neuron Moon is a collection of low-fi, home recordings with lots of odd vocal effects and goofy lyrics on top of acoustic guitar and simple programmed drums. The artist who just goes by the name Chris, describes the work as “strange tunes from the ether of my imagination and psychosis”. There are a few gems that peek through the chaos that is this album, but you’ll have to find them on your own.
Alfy’s Demo Dump – Bla Bla Bla!!!
Bla, Bla Bla!!! is the latest in a recent string of EPs released under the name Alfy’s Demo Dump, presumably the result of someone with a guitar, a drum program and a love for three chord punk. The songs are well played and of course, coming from Moncton, a perfect fit for what that city is known for. Solid stuff. Alfy should grab his guitar and computer and play some shows. Someone needs to show all these bedroom musicians out there that it is possible to play your songs live, even if your band members are all ones and zeros. I’d pay $5 to see that.
Gold Punks – Confidence Interval
Gold Punks make some of the finest dance music ‘round these parts. A project from Saint John synthsmith Dan Chamberlain, who also happens to be one half of the mega party duo Shrimp Ring, Gold Punks go a little deeper on texture and arrangements than a lot of other regional musicians writing and releasing electronic music do. His genuine appreciation for retro tones and classic dance beats define much of this album. Confidence Interval was originally planned as a three song EP, but grew to become a full album during the creative process. Amen to that.
