A one woman cabaret performance about motherhood.
Solo Chicken Productions’ Artistic Producer Lisa Anne Ross will be performing her one woman solo show, Engorged at the Black Box Theatre in Fredericton, New Brunswick on June 11th and 12th 2015. The show, directed by movement artist, Lesandra Dodson, is a hilarious and occasionally poignant romp through the tribulations of motherhood.
“It’s a one-woman cabaret performance about motherhood made up of five individual pieces,” said Ross. “Each piece involves a different character who presents a different conundrum or perspective on the theme.”
Ross began work on the show shortly after the birth of her first child, imagining that all that sleeplessness should at least result in some comic gold. The piece hearkens back to her early work as a regular on the Toronto cabaret circuit both hosting and performing and ranges from comedic monologues, to abstract movement to performance art.
Engorged was originally conceived in Toronto with support from acclaimed feminist performance artist, Jess Dobkin. Lesandra Dodson joined the creative team in 2012 as the director and helped to shape the piece before it debuted at the Museum of Motherhood in New York City in May of 2012.
The Fredericton debut of Engorged welcomes technical director Chris Saad to the project and includes shadow puppetry by local artist, musician and creative advocate, Penelope Stevens.
“It’s just a fun show,” said Ross. “It’s about 5% serious and 95% silly and it’s not just a show for women. I’m a mother and so this show is really my perspective on the world of motherhood through my own experiences. It’s just a show about me and my shit.’
