Field recordings, textiles, wood carving and Petrykivka painting are all featured in this week’s resident artist roundup.
There is no shortage of artist residencies happening across the city this summer. The City of Fredericton, the Fredericton Arts Alliance and the Charlotte Street Arts Centre each have artist residency programs underway over the summer months. We encourage you all to visit these artists in person during their residencies and follow them online to see what they are up to.
This week, the City of Fredericton’s artists are creating projects in both the Fredericton Botanic Garden and at Killarney Lake Park.
Cat Candow July 15—July 26 (Fredericton Botanic Garden)
Cat Candow is a textile artist and educator. She will create intricate bobbin lace through meticulous sketching and weaving, each thread becoming a brushstroke, reflecting the organic tapestry of nature. Charles Harding July 15—July 26 (Killarney Lake Park)
Charles Harding, a sound artist and composer, will be crafting immersive experiences that celebrate the harmony between humans and nature. Inspired by the tranquility of Killarney Lake Park, he will create electroacoustic compositions and stunning audiovisual pieces. Using field recorders and video cameras, he will capture the essence of these spaces, inviting everyone to join in and connect with nature. Through interactive sessions and lively social media updates, Harding invites you to share in this journey of creativity, discovery, and ecological awareness.

The Fredericton Arts Alliance has been running it’s summer residency programs in the Garrison Square casemates for decades with the exception of Covid’s interruption.
Timothy “Bjorn” Jones July 12-19 (Garrison Square Casemates)
Timothy Jones is known for his intricate wood sculptures, kickstarted by a workshop at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. His work, often focuses on faces or masks, and encourages viewers to interact with the tree as a being, not just a resource, promoting a deeper connection with nature. He practices traditional carving without power tools, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to shine. Jones’s process spans from chiselling to sanding up to 7,000 grit to reveal the full quality of the wood.

Iryna “Eereen” Shevchenko July 12-19 (Garrison Square Casemates)
Iryna Shevchenko brings the vibrant tradition of Petrykivka painting, a Ukrainian folk art, to her residency. Petrykivka is characterized by floral patterns, distinctive brushwork, and traditionally a white background. Her artistic talents are not limited to Petrykivka, she is skilled in other Ukrainian folk arts, such as Pysankarstvo, decorating Easter eggs, and Vytynanka, paper cutting. She draws inspiration from her environment, from sunlight and blooming flowers.
Charles Harding has also begun an eight month residency at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre during which time he will be collecting sounds and creating new compositions based on the various noises captured within the centre’s 140 year old building.
