In case you missed it, the title track from Brookside Mall’s upcoming EP Preservation debuted to a national audience via Exclaim! on February 27.

Today the band has released a video for the track, shot and edited by New Brunswick filmmaker Michael Ryan Mohan.

“Brendan [MaGee] and I have closely collaborated on short films together and are always using relationships as a source of creative inspiration,” said Mohan. “But mostly the failure of relationships.”

Mohan’s minimalist approach to filmmaking has become a defining characteristic of his work with long, still shots and simple compositions often offering the viewer more questions than answers.

“In this case I felt compelled to show the absence of a person with the empty apartment and the memories as projected through films,” he said. “The unknown protagonist can only bare to remember their past love through fiction. I myself just got out of a six-year relationship so this track by Brookside Mall hit me hard.”

“Michael and I have a tremendous working relationship which extends from a loving friendship and mutual respect for each other’s work,” said Magee. “Brookside Mall has typically been a very insular project, but working with Michael has helped me shed much of the insecurity that goes along with my relative newness to songwriting.

“His curation pits tender memories and private moments against lonely, vacant spaces, neatly enveloping Preservation‘s sentiment of cloudy nostalgia. As Josh [Steeves] so aptly put it, these are ‘black and white memories that lack the complexities of the heartbreaking truth’.”

Brookside Mall is Brendan MaGee (vocals/keys), Josh Steeves (drums) and Dylan Ward (bass).

Preservation will be released April 14, 2017 via Front Porch Records.
