Bard in the Barracks is set to stage the company’s eleventh annual outdoor summer Shakespeare production in downtown Fredericton.

Pericles is a swashbuckling adventure story bursting with drama, comedy, and romance. Pericles, Prince of Tyre, travels by sea to many exotic foreign lands, encountering both triumphs and heartbreak along the way. Pericles cheats death multiple times, rescues a destitute kingdom, wins the hand of a beautiful princess, and then loses all in a series of calamities that test him severely. On the journey to its ultimately joyous resolution, the play is filled with a cast of colorful characters that includes fearsome assassins, treacherous rulers, sorcerers, pirates, and the comically low-life denizens of a depraved red light district.

Bard in the Barracks’ immersive site-specific staging of the play will take audiences on a trip around a fantastical turn of the 20th century world, as imagined through the lens of early science fiction—a  magical world of sea voyages and shipwrecks, aviatrixes and airships, wild lumberjack contests and dark and unholy rites. Audience members will be part of the action, accompanying Pericles on his tempest-tossed travels through beautiful and rugged Odell Park, with many of the play’s scenes set in locations that have been stunningly altered by post-Tropical Storm Arthur. Along the way, an original live musical and vocal score performed by the company will be a vital part of the storytelling.

The Adventures of Pericles will be performed at 7:30 nightly from June 22 through July 3, with no show on June 27. Tickets range from $10-$18 with discounts for preview performances (June 22nd and 23rd) and for groups. Audience members are encouraged to wear good walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a blanket or cushion to sit on.
