Saint John musician honours his grandmother on the first single off his forthcoming release.

David R. has become a non-stop, music-making machine, as prolific as they come. Never one to repeat himself, Elliott remains forward thinking in his mission to honour his hometown and his family through his art.
Something About The Way, the first single from his forthcoming album Common St, finds Elliott stepping away from the mic to welcome the voice of Becky Saimon to lead this latest single. Based around a simple piano arrangement skillfully performed by Jason Keddy, Something About The Way may be the first David R. track to not feature David R. At least not in recorded form.
Elliott wrote, mixed and produced the track with arrangement help from Keddy, Saimon and long-time collaborator Evan Matthews.
Something About The Way was inspired by a family story involving Elliott’s grandmother, the late Ethel Elliott.
“My grandmother’s story is of course the stuff of legend in my family,” said Elliott. “My grandmothers on both sides were incredibly important matriarchs in the lives of countless people so their story is very important to me. With this song I basically tried my best to honour Nanny Elliott’s. Her story about having to separate the kids is one I wrote about after hearing my aunt Josie tell her perspective on the story at Nan’s funeral. It was a very, very hard day and afterwards I felt different about what I was doing as an artist, and it really pointed the album to its real purpose.”
Something About The Way was released on Ethel’s birthday, June 6. Common St, Elliott’s follow-up to 2017 Strawberry Grass is due out this fall via his own label, Working Class Records.
