Saint John’s Imperial Theatre celebrates its 25th season with an impressive lineup of performances.

Grid City Magazine was not able to attend this year’s season launch at the Imperial Theatre but thankfully, they brought the launch to us in the most unique and memorable way we could have ever imagined. Following last week’s official launch event which drew more than 450 curious art lovers and supporters to the one of New Brunswick’s most beautiful concert venues for a sneak peek at the season to come, a box showed up at our door. And inside that box…..A HUMAN FINGER!…..sort of.
If there was ever a way to make a lasting impression about an upcoming performance, this would be it. The finger, as an attached note explained, was a clever marketing tool the Imperial team put together to support Evil Dead, The Musical which will receive a two show run in the days leading up to Halloween. I didn’t even know there was a musical version of this quirky cult-classic. Now I’ll never forget it. Described as being “one of the craziest, funniest, and bloodiest theatrical experiences of all time”, it seems the perfect fit for a city with a proven love for music, theatre and distinctive arts experiences. I’m thinking this one might be worth the drive from Fredericton.
But that’s just one show. They launched an entire season last week. One that includes a ton of live music with performances by Brett Kissel, Royal Wood, Fortunate Ones, Eric Harper and Classic Albums Live doing their take on Led Zeppelin and Queen. For theatre, there is Blindside, a comedy by one-eyed storytelling champion and cancer survivor Stephanie Morin-Robert who recounts her life as a feisty, glass-eye wielding seven year-old; Theatre New Brunswick’s production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; and Prisoner of Tehran, Marina Nemat’s deeply moving story about living through the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
There are also a lot of shows programmed specifically for families and for children. There’s even a retro film series that blends classic horror, suspense and drama for a cheap and fun night on the town.
