Now entering its third year, Fredericton’s Living Roots Music Festival announce Irish Mythen, Bad Strangers and Outside I’m A Giant for 2018 event.

Fredericton’s Living Roots Music Festival has announced the first performers scheduled to take the stage during the event’s third annual festival slated to take place May 24-26. The festival focuses largely on roots and folk based musicians while also welcoming performers influenced by both genres.

Last year’s event welcomed more than 40 musical acts to the region performing throughout the city and surrounding communities.

“We are focused on bringing in great artists that are not household names and we encourage people to look these artists up and seek out the show, introduce a friend to them hang out with the artist,” said festival founder Eddie Young. “We try to encourage the acts to stay in town for the duration of the festival , take in our city.  We will have some returning acts from last year that just fell in love with Fredericton and the people here that asked to come back right away.”

Today, festival organizers announced Irish Mythen (Ireland/PEI), Bad Strangers (Vancouver) and Outside I’m A Giant (Hull, QC) in the first round of artist announcements.

Irish Mythen

Mythen is a globetrotting troubadour – an Irish-born, contemporary Canadian folk artist who’s been amassing accolades and achievements across several continents over the years. Her presence and charisma simply command attention, and regardless of where she takes the stage, she delivers a sonic and emotional experience that transcends language and location; that reaches the very core of what connects us. It’s an experience that, in recent years, has earned her spots performing alongside Rod Stewart, Gordon Lightfoot, and Lucinda Williams and billings on major festival stages the world over.

Cassidy and Cory have both been using songwriting to understand their lives for years; not always easy, but certainly rewarding. Cassidy’s haunting autoharp and sultry vocals combined with Cory’s tasty guitar and magnetic stage presence create the foundation for their honest and heartfelt songs. From truthful ballads to gritty room-shakers, their goal is to connect and allow themselves to be vulnerable, creating a safe space for you to be vulnerable too. Their chemistry and harmonies will suck you in, but the sincerity in their words will make you stay.

Floating down from the upper Gatineau, the haunting ethereal sounds of Outside I’m a Giant carry homage to the balladry of Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot, steering towards scintillating instrumental arrangements.

Based in Hull, Quebec, the Ambient Folk trio Outside I’m a Giant was founded in early 2016 by Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist, Jérémi Pierre Caron. Jérémi called upon members of previous projects, combining the talents of two multi-instrumentalist,  Samuelle Desjardins and long-time collaborator Pascal Desgagné to make Outside I’m a Giant one of the more promising bands to come out of the Gatineau hills.

Although being a relatively new project, the band has quickly attracted a following on both sides of the Ottawa River through captivating performances in music venues such as The Black Sheep Inn and Ottawa CityFolk Festival 2016 as well as live radio performances on the CKCU’s Canadian Spaces, The Brew on CKCU and Indie City Madness.

“You will of course see a lot of our local favorites as well and will be pairing these up for some great collaborations,” said Young.
