The exhibition The Sublime Mastery of Still Life will showcase work by renowned Canadian painter Joseph Plaskett, opening December 1.
Born in British Columbia in 1918, Joseph Plaskett received formal education at the University of British Columbia before pursuing his interest in art with great passion. Attending the Vancouver School of Art between 1940 and 1942, Plaskett was encouraged by the praise he received from a who’s who of Canadian art including AY Jackson, Lawren Harris, Jock MacDonald and others.
The first to receive the Emily Carr scholarship in 1946, Plaskett went on to study in San Francisco with David Park and Clyfford Still, in New York with Hans Hoffman and later in Fernand Léger in Paris, a city he would later call home.
Plaskett divided much of his career between working in France and teaching and exhibiting in Canada. Years later he would later found the Plaskett Foundation to fund a year of European development for young Canadian artists annually stating, “I created this award in emulation of what Emily Carr did for me in 1946. I would like young Canadian artists to enjoy the privileges I experienced more than a half century ago. Europe and, above all, France, have left me richer in knowledge and experience. Although things have changed a great deal since I first traveled and studied abroad, the lesson of Europe and its past is always waiting for those ready to learn.”

Joseph Plaskett is a renowned, honoured Canadian painter whose work will be featured at Gallery 78 beginning December 1st. Plaskett’s work has been widely collected by individuals, corporations, and major public galleries, including the National Gallery of Canada. His images are eternal in their simplicity, timeless in their subject, and universal in their concerns. Each work expresses a warm humanity, and reveals the artist’s mastery of light, form, and colour. This collection of never before seen still life pastels from his Estate offers us an opportunity to slow down – be still – to wonder about the, seemingly, simplest of things in life.
The Sublime Mastery of Still Life will be accompanied by the gallery’s annual Christmas Choice exhibition which will include paintings, pastel, pencil drawings, holiday inspired porcelain, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture and a wide variety of tastes and budgets.
