Theatre UNB concludes its 2016-2017 season with Henrik Ibsen’s compelling psychological drama, Hedda Gabler.
In his classic work, Hedda Gabler, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen presents the audience with an uncompromising heroine trapped in a society that does not suit her liking. As both a victim of circumstance and a master manipulator, Gabler’s cruelty in this popular psychological drama is equal parts alluring and unnerving.
“The role of Hedda Gabler is incredibly challenging,” said director Len Falkenstein. “For one thing, it’s simply a huge role and the character is extremely complex. Actors who can play that role don’t come along every day, so we’re fortunate to have a young actor of the caliber of Kate Aldacosta to play her in our production.”
A media release announcing the production states, “Ibsen’s reputation and popularity as a playwright are second only to Shakespeare, and Hedda Gabler is widely regarded as his masterpiece. The role of Hedda Gabler is considered the female equivalent to playing Hamlet, with a veritable who’s who of famous actresses having taken on the role, and making this an exciting chance for Fredericton audiences to experience this revered modern classic.”
This production is final show of the season for Theatre UNB and follows successful productions of Orwell’s Children (Harold Pinter and Caryl Churchill), Venus in Fur (David Ives) and Better Living (George F. Walker).
Directed by Len Falkenstein, Hedda Gabler will be performed at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus at 7:30 nightly, Wednesday, March 29 through Saturday, April 1.
