Artists Allison Green and Benjamin Dugdale share the Fredericton Arts Alliance’s casemate August 1-7, 2016.
August brings silk painter/textile artist Allison Green and screenwriter/filmmaker Benjamin Dugdale to the Barracks for a residency. The Artist in Residence program run by the Fredericton Arts Alliance encourages strong artistic talent in the Fredericton region and promotes local artists.
Allison Green started her project in an earlier week-long. She has won several awards including the Nel Oudemans Award and the ArtsNB Creation Grant and has been working on a series of embroidered silk paintings which are all painted and machine embroidered on-site. The artist produces nearly-living textile art and is spending her residency exploring what the idea of ‘home’ means in relation to new places.
Benjamin Dugdale is a recent winner of GEIST Magazine’s Short Long-Distance Writing Contest. He received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council award for graduate studies and has screened short films in festivals from Edmonton to Fredericton, winning awards at Silver Wave Film Festival in 2013 for Brewing Bromance and winning Picaroons’ contest, ‘Films On Tap.’
While Dugdale is in residence, he plans to finish shooting an experimental analog feature film, Contents Under Pressure, and would like to begin to edit it. Visitors to the casemate could see how Dugdale shoots and edits analog film. He intends to work with the theme of New Ground by exploring identity in a transplanted world; Dugdale’s film is about a hero who wakes up disenchanted, travelling to the moon to reconnect with it and for the hero to discover himself. Dugdale, who has completed a residency in Banff, AB, graduated from UNB in May with a BA in English in Creative Writing and a Film Production Certificate. He will begin an MA in English in Creative Writing at Concordia University this Fall.
Green and Dugdale will share the casemate at the Soldiers’ Barracks from August 1-7. It is open to visitors seven days a week all summer: Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
