Category: movies 229

Luciana-KaplanIn this inspiring award-winning portrait of human resilience and unwavering optimism, an indigenous woman defies patriarchy and state power in Oaxaca, Mexico. As a young woman, Eufrosina Cruz Mendoza decided to embark on a campaign to break the cycle of teenage pregnancy and domestic poverty that she saw growing up in her region. To this end, in 2007, Eufrosina Mendoza was elected president of Oaxaca’s municipal council, but was denied the position because she was an indigenous woman. Instead of stopping her, this denial started her on an even bigger political career. Filmmaker Luciana Kaplan doggedly follows the politician as she attacks gender inequality and the lack of women’s voting rights in her community.

This film is cohosted by UNB’s Gender and Women’s Studies Program and Sophie Lavoie will moderate the discussion. The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

Films are free to the public. Donations are welcome to help with network membership fees. (Washrooms are not accessible, sorry!).
