From its home inside the Student Union Building on the University of New Brunswick campus, CHSR 97.9 FM has been quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) supporting the greater Fredericton community for more than 50 years. That is a long time for any non-profit organization. So long in fact, that it can be easy to forget the importance community support plays in keeping this vital resource operating, as is the case with CHSR.
It has been a tough few years for the station, but as a listener you would never know it. Despite the unplanned downsizing of the station’s SUB footprint, which involved relocating its fabled record library, and the inability to share content on social media channels thanks to Meta’s ongoing dispute with the Government of Canada, CHSR has continued to diversify its programing and broaden its volunteer base to meet the many challenges facing community radio broadcasting in the 21st century. Most importantly, the station’s support of local and regional artists has not wavered.
But help is important. Giving back is important.
CHSR will host a fundraising concert this Thursday at The Cap with performances by Qwinn, Kathleen Schurman, Joe Ross, Travis Flynn, Graeme Kennedy and Radiator, Honey Gut, and Stephen Hero.
