Artists selected for ten-day residency at Metepenagiag Heritage Park and Outdoor Lodge from June 16 – 25, 2023.
Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective, L’Association acadienne des artistes professionnel.le.s du Nouveau-Brunswick (AAAPNB), and ArtsLink NB are pleased to announce the nine artists selected for the fourth Cross Cultural Creation residency. Three Indigenous artists, three Francophone artists, and three Anglophone artists will embark on a 10-day residency that will take place at Metepenagiag Heritage Park and Outdoor Lodge from June 16 – 25, 2023.
This place-based experience, steeped in the history of a “village of 30 centuries,” will provide artists with opportunities to reflect on the meaning of ancestry, their own ancestral lines, and the relationships between past, present, and future generations. Nine artists from the province’s three largest cultural groups will have the opportunity to work on a personal project as well as exchange creative energy and cultural wisdom with other artists.
This year’s residency will be hosted by Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective with the theme Netukulimk. This is a teaching shared by Elder Albert Marshall of Esksoni First Nation, who will join the artists during the residency. Netakulimk is described as “the use of the natural bounty provided by the Creator for the self-support and well-being of the individual and the community.” Western thinkers might understand this to mean simply “sustainability,” but as Elder Albert will teach us, Netakulimk encompasses core aspects of humanness; interconnectedness; and the four core values of respect, responsibility, relationship, and reciprocity.
Selected artists:
Natasha Sacobie (visual arts, quillwork), Starlit Simon (visual arts, mixed media and porcupine spines), Ursula Bear (traditional native mixed media artist, birch bark, quillwork, pottery), Guillaume Adjutor Provost (interdisciplinary visual artist, sculpture, woodcarving), Lucie Quintal (textile and fibre artist), Sarah Brideau (writer), Carol Collicutt (mixed media artist, sculpture), Ashley Henwood (visual arts, painting, drawing, sculpture), and Jenna Lyn Albert (poet).
“We are looking forward to hosting the upcoming Cross-Cultural Residency at Metepenagiag Heritage Park and Outdoor Lodge,” says Tara Francis, Chair of Mawi’Art Board of Directors. “Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective’s Board and staff anticipate an inspiring week of connecting, sharing knowledge and perspectives, and increasing collaboration across cultures in beautiful and nourishing surroundings.”
The public will be invited to meet the artists in an open studio day on June 24, where they can share their work and their process, contributing to the cross-cultural exchange. The residency runs from June 16 – June 25.
