We’ve hand picked five upcoming performances to help you shake your post-Shivering Songs winter blues. Here’s our list of suggestions.
SNB Virtuoso Series Presents Songs for Now | January 26 | McCain Hall, STU | 7:30 p.m.
Our list of weekly recommendations begins with a Thursday evening performance at STU’s McCain Hall featuring soprano Sally Dibblee. Together with a three piece ensemble made up of members of Symphony New Brunswick, Dibblee will perform a selection of songs to bring a little warmth to your January. Of the several shows happening this week, this one may be the most unique. The most memorable. View Event
Note: This ensemble will also be performing in Moncton and Saint John later in the week. Visit symphonynb.ca for details.
Walkin’ Bridge | January 27 | The Tipsy Muse Café | 7 p.m.
It is safe to say Fredericton is not known for its thriving jazz scene. But it’s starting to feel like that may be changing. Walkin’ Bridge is one of the latest jazz ensembles to emerge in the city. Catch the band in performance at the ever-intimate Tipsy Muse Café this Friday to hear interpretations of compositions by Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, Dave Holland, Chick Corea, and others. No slouches in this lineup. Should be a ripper. | View Event
Heavy Metal Weekender at Broken Record Bar & Music Room | January 27-28 | 8 p.m.
It didn’t take long for Broken Record Bar & Music Room to find its place in the city scene. A great compliment to popular downstages like The Cap and the Tipsy Muse, the “Broken Record” fills a lot of holes. One of those being a venue for regular heavy music performances. This weekend the venue will flex its metal might offering a two night lineup featuring some of the region’s loudest music makers and touring acts. If you enjoy a bit of metal, hardcore, and thrash in your diet, you’ll want to grab tickets for this one. | View Event (Friday) and View Event (Saturday).
Diner Drugs + Johnny Deathwish + The Merci-Buckets | January 28 | The Cap | 8:30 p.m.
As a compliment to what’s happening down the street at the Broken Record, The Cap and She Said Feck Records will be hosting a three band bill of equal weight, measure, and might with Moncton heavies Diner Drugs and Johnny Deathwish sharing the bill with Fredericton’s own, The Merci-Buckets. Say goodbye to January with a sweaty t-shirt and a few new bruises. | View Event
Faded Flannel- A Tribute to Grunge | January 28 | Grimross Brewing Co. | 6 p.m.
As a rule, we don’t usually mention tribute shows. Our focus has always been on supporting the work of original music makers. But there is always room for an exception and this is one of those moments. Faded Flannel – A Tribute to Grunge will feature a city wide line-up of musicians playing their favourite songs from the era that had the largest impact on popular music since the birth of rock and roll, all in support of the Living Roots Music Festival. Enjoy a nostalgic romp through the new era of “classic rock”. Shorts with long underwear encouraged, but not mandatory. | View Event
