Live Music Returns to the Imperial Theatre This Month

Rose Cousins will be the first musician to play the Imperial Theatre since the lockdown. See her on stage this Friday as the Imperial officially welcomes performers and audiences back.

Rose Cousins kicks off a month of live music as the Imperial Theatre returns to regular programming.

It’s been a while since audiences have gathered at Saint John’s Imperial Theatre to enjoy a performance. But live music makes its return this month, almost exactly six months from when the theatre closed its doors back in March.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up in September:

Rose Cousins will perform two shows (6 p.m. and 9 p.m.) on September 11. Her latest album ‘Bravado’ was released February 21 via Outside Music. Cousins had originally planned to tour the Maritimes last March with John Paul White but was forced to reschedule.

The Theatre’s Incubator Project, launched in May, offers local artists the opportunity to rehearse and mentor with Imperial’s staff and technicians to help strengthen both their performance and business chops. On September 19, four of this year’s project participants (Brandon Kingston, Before the Mast, Arpyll Aileen and Kendra Gale Band) will bring local music to a local audience with an evening performance beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The following night (Sept. 20) Elizabeth Fry Society of Saint John presents Singing My Way Home: Songs by Women Incarcerated at New Brunswick Women’s Correctional Centre in Miramichi performed by Moon Joyce and Rachael Grant with the Saint John String Quartet and members of Symphony New Brunswick. Jessica Rhaye and Maggie Paul will also add their singing voices to the concert.

The Divorcees have announced plans for a new album due sometime in the coming year. The band will bring their own brand of no-nonsense, blue-collar Americana to the Imperial stage on September 25.

This opening string of live music performances wraps up with back to back shows on September 26 featuring Sadie and Motherhood (5:45 p.m.) and Wolf Castle and Little You Little Me. Don’t miss this big night of indie talent!
