The City of Fredericton requests design proposals for a sculpture to be carved in-situ from a white pine tree in Odell Park. The pine suffered irreparable damage during a flash storm in June. It was later removed after both City Foresters, and the Fredericton Tree Commission determined it was structurally unsafe.
City staff took great care during the removal process and salvaged a remaining stump of approximately 3 metres high by 2 metres in diameter at its root collar for a sculptural piece. Several larger limbs remain attached as well.
The tree should be sculpted this fall to allow optimal temperatures so that a preservative treatment can be applied and prevent further deterioration of the wood.
Interested artists, artist collectives and sculptors currently living in New Brunswick should reply with their design concept, sketch, a timeline for sculpting the piece, treatment process, and a resume outlining past relevant experience. The design concept may need to be altered based on the condition of the wood. Some rot is present although the extent is not known.
The budget for this sculptural project is $7,500 and includes artist materials, equipment, and application of preservative treatment. Proof of liability insurance is also required. The full call for submissions, along with photos of the tree, can be found at www.fredericton.ca/publicart.
