Loyalist City Shakespeare Goes All-In with Fall Performances

Category: stage 139

Loyalist City Shakespeare takes on 37 shows in 97 minutes with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), September 22-26.

(Saint John) Better late than never! After plans for a 12 person production of Twelfth Night in July were abruptly halted due to COVID, the creative crew of local Shakespeare lovers have shifted gears and are getting ready to present a three person production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged).

Loyalist City Shakespeare is planning an action-packed adventure complete with Comedies, Histories and Tragedies in the fast-paced parody that tackles 37 shows in less than 100 minutes. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, parodies the plays of William Shakespeare with all of them being performed in comically shortened form by a small but mighty cast of three.

“The Complete Works Abridged combines two of my favorite things about theatre: Shakespeare and goofy jokes. It’s a light, fast-paced show to welcome us into the new normal,” said the show’s director, Neil Bonner. “Complete Works Abridged was originally performed in 1987 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival then revised in the 90s – but rest assured that this version will be brought up to speed for Saint John in 2020. You’ll have to see it to find out how!”

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) will run at the BMO Studio Theatre, 112 Princess Street, from September 22-26. Livestream performances will also be offered. Limited seating will be available for live performances and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets will go on sale September 1.

Note: the originally scheduled production of Twelfth Night has been postponed until summer of 2021. Funding has been provided by the Saint John Community Arts Board, BMO Financial and the Province of New Brunswick.

Loyalist City Shakespeare formed seven years ago to add more Shakespeare to the local theatre scene. Generally the group will produce one play each year and host the occasional Shakespeare related event. To learn more check them out on Facebook.
