A quick run through the limited events happening this week in the world of art, music and community.
Monday
Filmmaking Workshop: The Screenwriter’s Journey. The first step to making a great short film is to cultivate and perfect the script. This workshop intensive will help you take your scripts to the next level. Whether you’re just curious about screenwriting, seeking to develop your first short film, or looking to further hone your skills as a screenwriter, this workshop will help sharpen your writing abilities and aid you in feeling more comfortable and confident as a storyteller.
Instructor Jillian Acreman has directed six short films under the umbrella of Columbus Avenue Pictures which she founded in 2009. Acreman wrote and directed The Man Who Sold the World starring Golden Globe nominee Steve Railsback, and in 2014 she produced Pop (dir. Ryan O’Toole) which was selected by Telefilm Canada for the “Not Short on Talent” showcase at the Cannes Film Festival. Her short films Broke, The Editor, The Art of Decay, and North have previously been licensed to CBC for broadcast.

Wednesday
UNB Art Centre presents Design Works Wednesdays: Create at Home Series. Join the UNB Art Centre on Facebook for a series of live workshops each Wednesday from 10-11am.
Instructor Meghan Loch is an early elementary teacher and a former Design Works instructor, who also teaches music and art. Meghan believes that anyone can be an artist. She loves to lead students in whimsical, colourful arts and crafts projects that combine art fundamentals and imagination.
This week: Natural Clay Mobile. Take inspiration from the flowers and leaves around you and explore making imprints with this hanging mobile project! In this project, you’ll learn how to make impressions in clay, make ornaments, and assemble a mobile! Little fingers may need help with stringing beads and tying knots, so have a parent handy if your hands get tired or substitute thin wire or fishing line for string!
Filmmaking Workshop: Producing 101. Producers are involved in the filmmaking process from start to finish, filling a number of roles. This workshop will cover the practical elements of getting short films made from preproduction, production to post as a producer.
Instructor Tracey Lavigne is a writer, director, and producer based in Fredericton. She is producing the Ryan O’Toole feature film Further Than The Eye Can See, funded by the Telefilm Talent to Watch program, and has written, directed and produced three short films of her own. Her short films “Glitter” and “Mnemosyne” both won Best NB Short Film and the Viewers’ Choice Award at the Silver Wave Film Festival in 2017 and 2018.

Kylie Fox at the Tipsy Muse Café. Saint John folk sensation Kylie Fox performs as part of the Tipsy Muse Café’s Mellow Yellow Concert Series. These performances are limited to 25 seats. Customers can group in bubbles of 2 to 4. Patrons will text their orders from their seats versus lining up at the counter. All shows will begin at 7pm. Doors open at 6pm sharp.
Leather Jackal Live Stream from Maniac Mansion. Moncton’s Leather Jackal kick off a series of live streamed concerts from the Maniac Mansion. Full event and streaming info HERE. The party starts at 9 p.m.

The Montgomery Street Band on The Cap Patio! Fredericton bluegrass quartet The Montgomery Street Band will perform on The Cap patio from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. with food provided by The Tipsy Muse Cafe.

Summer Programs at the TNB Theatre School. The TNB Theatre School has announced plans for limited summer programming, beginning at the end of June and running through until August. The programs offered this summer include Junior Acting, Junior Musical Theatre, Intermediate Musical Theatre, Intermediate Senior Acting and Intermediate Senior Acting for the Camera with returning instructors Arianna Martinez and Gordon Mihan. The Cultural Expressions Festival. This year’s Cultural Expressions Festival will take place online with regular programming that includes multicultural dance, art, craft and cooking workshops, a living library, film screenings and storytelling. Learn more at cefnb.ca
Fredericton al Fresco Now in Operation. A partnership between the City of Fredericton, Downtown Fredericton and Business Fredericton North Inc. and part of the #SupportFredLocal initiative, Fredericton al Fresco launched on June 4. In support of local artists, the City will offer cultural initiatives as part of the Fredericton al Fresco effort, including low-key musical performances by local musicians beginning next week. A local art installation in Phoenix Square mid-June will also add a sense of Fredericton’s cultural flair to the dining area. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery wants to see Your Art on Their Walls! Art can bring together a community, and provide a way to respond to and process current events. This community has been through a lot in recent weeks and months, so the BAG wants to see your messages of hope and inspiration on their walls (outside, of course). They’ve started a chalk mural on the outside courtyard walls, and want you to add more! Bring your own chalk and draw some inspiration for passers-by. Please be kind and respectful of others; hate speech of any kind will not be tolerated.
The Calithumpians’ Act Now Drama Camps. Act Now and sign up for the Calithumpians’ Act Now Drama Camps. Registration for the 2020 summer season is now open. It’s a fun week of singing, dancing, and theatre for youth ages 6 to 14. Your child will have the opportunity to experience the creative process of writing and performing their own play under the guidance of the Calithumpians. Camps run through July to Labour Day weekend. This month at Gallery 78, enjoy an exhibition of work by Nova Scotia artist Monika Wright, a group exhibition dedicated to Fredericton and an exhibition of new work created by NBCCD’s 2020 Advanced Studio Practice graduates. Revelations: Selections from the UNB Permanent Collection presents Dark Night & Memento Mori. Revelations elaborates on ideas that were developed through the production of ATTENDING THE APOCALYPSE, an exhibition by Janice Wright Cheney and Jennifer Lee Wiebe, and UNB Art Centre’s first online exhibition. The second, Revelations, is designed to be seen online. Incubated during the COVID-19 lock down, it is curated using images of the collection from the database. It will unfold each week through a series of episodes released on the website and on social media. This week’s featured works include: Dark Night featuring the works of Burton Glendenning, Chris Giles, Julie MacIntyre, Alex Colvile, Roger Smith (interview on website) and Catherine Hale.
