A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Monday
Monday Night Film Series: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Winner of both the Queer Palm and Best Screenplay Awards at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the fourth feature from French writer-director Céline Sciamma (Girlhood) is an exquisite portrait of hidden love, art, eros, and the gaze. Set in 18th Century Brittany, Portrait of a Lady on Fire follows Marianne (Noémie Merlant), an artist commissioned by an Italian noblewoman (Valeria Golino) to paint a portrait of her reclusive daughter, Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), who is soon to be married. However, there are peculiar conditions of this assignment; Marianne must never announce to Héloïse the objective of her visit. Instead, Marianne is to act as a companion to Héloïse, escorting her on walks while closely observing her subject so as to render her likeness on canvas in secret.

Paper Bag Singers at Christ Church Cathedral. Bring your Valentine and serenade them with love songs from Elvis, John Denver, and Queen. Think you can’t carry a tune in a paper bag? No matter; together we all sound great! This is a singing group for people of all ages and singing abilities. There is no commitment, just join us when you can. It’s only $5 for an evening of music and fun. 7:30 – 9 p.m.
Cut/Paste/Resist: Pop-Up Exhibition in Student Union Building (Room 103). Cut/Paste/Resist is a community-driven exhibition of collage works focusing on the topic of “resistance”. Featuring new works by artists, students, art students, writers, writing students, children, and collage makers from around the world, it seeks to bring together people in an era of divisiveness and social disruption. Through the highly accessible art practice of collage, the exhibition provides a venue for participants to highlight issues that concern them while also having fun. Everyone is welcome, and the exhibition includes a Collage Station for anyone wanting to make a work on the spot and add it to the collection. 7 p.m.
Pink Lobster 2020: NB’s LGBTQ Film Festival (Feb. 10-15). Pink Lobster brings an audience together for three nights to showcase and celebrate wonderful, personal LGBTQIA+ stories. This festival screens a selection of short and feature length films with LGBTQIA+ themes produced around the world. Films previously screened include those from India, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Sweden, as well as several other countries. Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Dylan Ward hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Wednesday
MusicUNB presents Atlantic Sinfonia’s Winds of Moravia at Memorial Hall. In the late 18th century, musicians and composers flooded into Vienna from nearby Moravia and heavily influenced the development of classical music. Atlantic Sinfonia will perform as a wind octet (or Harmonie), a popular ensemble of the period, and highlight works by Moravian composers including Paul Wranitsky, David Moritz Michael, Nannette Steicher, and Franz Krommer. 7:30 p.m.
Curator Crunch (Mary Pratt’s Table) at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Join Manager of Collections and Exhibitions John Leroux each month for an exciting, intimate, and fast-paced look at artworks on display, designed to comfortably fit in your lunch break. See what these artworks say, and how they connect us with the world – how’s that for “food for thought”? 12:15 p.m. – 12:50 p.m.
Thursday
Symphony New Brunswick in Concert in McCain Hall, Room 101. A String quartet program to celebrate the romanticism that emerges mid-February. Tickets available at the door. $26 Adults/$10 Students/ Children and STU students free.
Friday
Gravity & Other Myths at The Playhouse. Internationally renowned circus company, Gravity & Other Myths pushes the boundaries of contemporary circus. Formed in Adelaide, Australia in 2009, they’ve rocketed to stellar acclaim with a series of disarmingly accomplished ensemble works. Their work utilises an honest approach to performance, to create shows with a focus on human connection and acrobatic virtuosity. In their latest piece, Backbone, a high-octane spree of physical virtuosity, they test the limits of strength: physical, emotional, individual and collective. 7:30 p.m.
The Hypos Trio Live at The Tipsy Muse Café. Valentine’s Day at The Muse with some heartbreak numbers by 1/2 of Fredericton’s The Hypochondriacs. 7 p.m.
Valentine’s Day Dinner at The Beaverbrook Art Gallery. An unforgettable evening: Dine surrounded by some of the Gallery’s masterpieces. Have your appetizer with Boudin, a meal with Turner, and coffee with Tissot, all in an intimate atmosphere that will make this Gallery feel like your very own. Tickets available on Eventbrite.
Saturday
Sean One Album Release Show at The Capital. An evening of East Coast hip hop OGs is happening at The Capital in celebration of Sean One’s new album, Development. Joining Sean will be Dj Uncle Fester, Ghettosocks, Ambition (also releasing new album), Monark, STV, Above, KXNG Wooz and Aquakultre. Big night! 9 p.m.
The Shakedown at The Phoenix. The Shake Down’s back! Bringing you the hottest in rap, house music and club remixes!! Come catch DJ’s FRNK, Andrew Bishop and 6lackout turn The Phoenix out until the lights turn on! 10 p.m.
Stratified at The Tipsy Muse Café. Solid songwriting, anchored by the prominent maritime feel of the acoustic guitar and fiddle, driven forward by a rhythm section steeped in the Crazy Horse back catalogue. 7 p.m.
Sunday
Dose- A tribute to Gov’t Mule at The Capital. Monday is a holiday and it has been a few years since the mighty MULE have played Fredericton and we know some of you have the itch, so here is your chance. 9 p.m.
Family Art Day at The Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Bring the whole family to the Gallery’s Family Art Days! This series, offered on the last Sunday of each month, includes musical performances, multiple artist workshops, free admission, and more. 12-5 p.m.
