A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Monday
Fredericton Arts Alliance Artists in Residence: Vena Carr & Anne Stillwell-Leblanc
Local illustrator Vena Carr and local block-printing artist Anne Stillwell-Leblanc will work on art projects as part of the summer residence series in the Soldiers’ Barracks.
Verna Carr, who designs her own line of stationery and aspires to become a children’s book illustrator, will draw on her upbringing in rural New Brunswick by illustrating a 3-part series featuring the tree-dwelling animals that lived near her childhood home. She will also head a fourth illustration where she will invite the public to add their favourite animals to the scene.
Anne Stillwell-LeBlanc, whose work has been on showcase in many New Brunswick craft shows (including the Garrison Night Market, Capital 100 or Less Sale, and the Area 506 Festival), will be engaging the public with opportunities to carve and print with linoleum blocks and ink. She plans to have a large forestry print that will allow many people to contribute to the project.
The studio is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Outdoor Summer Concert Series: Fredericton Society of Saint Andrews Pipe Band. This free concert at Officer’s Square begins at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Outdoor Summer Concert Series: Simon Daniel (alternative). This free concert at Officer’s Square begins at 7:30 p.m. Rain Date: Wednesday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday
Motown Downtown with Sugarbomb at The Capital. This 6-piece musical party has come together with a purpose to bring about the joyful revival of what is felt as the dynamo sound that impacted nearly everything during a Golden age of popular music – Motown & Soul. Comprised of some of Fredericton’s best musicians ready to bring all the soul and funk to you! 10 p.m. $6.
Outdoor Summer Concert Series: Sugar Bomb (Motown – Soul). 7 p.m. Lawrence Amphitheatre (Nashwaaksis Commons). Free. Rain Date: Monday, September 2 at 7 p.m.
Life on the Edge: A Human History of the Grand Dérangement at Government House. The expulsion of Acadians to international destinations will be the focus of historian Christopher Hodson’s keynote presentation in the Acadians of the St. John River speaker series. In his keynote presentation, Hodson argues that the violent expulsion of the Acadians that begin in 1755 triggered profound, permanent changes throughout what are now the Canadian Maritimes. Those tragic events also scattered Acadians to the far corners of an expanding imperial world; from the Falkland Islands to the Caribbean to the landlocked heartland of France and beyond.
Thursday
Garrison Night Market. On summer Thursdays, Carleton Street in the Historic Garrison District comes alive with the Garrison Night Market! Each week features new vendors and entertainment! The market operates from 4:30pm to 9:00pm, June 20th to September 5th, 2019.

Sam and Becca & Daughter of the Moon at Grimross Brewing Co. Daughter of the Moon is a dream/folk songstress who moves around the world with her guitar, turning her experiences into songs. Her live performances of voice and acoustic guitar have been described as haunting, yet healing and her songs, sweet and melancholic. Bringing a soulful acoustic vibe back into the modern pop sound, indie R&B musicians and twin sisters Sam & Becca take inspiration from artists such as Billie Eilish, Jessie Reyes, and Kehlani. 7:30 p.m. $10.
Friday
A Tribute to Tom Petty at Grimross Brewing Co. An all-star tribute to Tom Petty performed by an impressive cast of New Brunswick contemporary country musicians. 8 p.m. $10-$15.
Marian + Provincial Camps + Charles Harding at The Capital. Raging post-hardcore from Montreal, classic ear-worm rock from Fredericton and a new electronic music project from Freddy Beach homeboy Charles Harding. 10:30 p.m. $8.
The Tispy Muse Café presents CHIPS. Hard to believe that by the time of this show, summer will be over…lets blow it up big time, and welcome back the students with CHIPS. Cathartic and anthemic, CHIPS deliver honest, in-your-face punk rock that recalls the emotional hooks of Taking Back Sunday, the experimentation and honesty of Thrice, and the jovial camaraderie of Blink 182. 7 p.m. $10.
The Official Harvest Pre-Party Featuring Joyful Noise + Crossroad Devils and Mike Rickard at The Delta Fredericton. Joyful Noise draw influence from a wide array of contemporary and foundation artists in the jazz, funk, and blues traditions, as well as style elements from rock, electronica, and pop culture. Joyful Noise‘s debut release “Cocoloco” (2018) was nominated Music New Brunswick Album of The Year and ECMA Instrumental Recording of The Year. The Crossroad Devils are a five-piece rock outfit based in Fredericton who play music rooted in old-fashioned rock and blues jams. 6 p.m. $20-$25.
Saturday
Moving Right Along: A Night of Comedy at the Wilser’s Room. After you’ve moved that last couch up Regent, have that celebratory pizza and beer with a handful of comedians who’ve probably labeled their fair share of boxes this week. So before you grab your keys to your new place, start that new job or go back to school, why not come out and celebrate with us: footloose and fancy free. Come on out, grab a drink with some of Fredericton’s funniest and have a grand ol time! Hosted by Louis Anthony Bryan. 8:30 p.m.
Folly Presents: Midas Well Creations featuring Superfluid at The Capital. August 31st will be the first of monthly Art installments Feels Good is bringing back into the Phoenix! Followed by an evening of properly grooved tunes in The Capital with Superfluid. 10 p.m. $10.
The Tipsy Muse Café presents Evan LeBlanc. A summer Saturday night with one of our favorite singer/songwriters; Evan Leblanc. What more could you ask for?
Known mostly for his work with Fredericton rock band David in the Dark, LeBlanc has seen stages all across the country, both big and (very) small. He has played for crowds of hundreds, and crowds of just a few at festivals, bars, cafes, and even living rooms. Music is what he loves! Whether it’s with the full band or just him and his guitar, it’s always about the music. 7 p.m. $10.
Sunday
Under the Stars Film Series: Sunday Night Classics. Bridge Over The River Kwai (1957). This free film screening in Officer’s Square begins at dusk.
Ongoing:
Wabanaki Art, Tradition and Culture on Display at the Fredericton Region Museum. Fibre artist Carol Harquail and visual artist Patrick Nelson will be on site at the museum throughout July and August to showcase their art and interact with museum visitors. Guests are also invited to view the Wabanaki Way exhibit curated by Ramona Nicholas, Elder in Residence at UNB. The Fredericton Region Museum is located at 571 Queen Street, Fredericton and is open daily Monday through Sunday until August 31. For further information please call 455-6041.
Queer Identities: Pride Art Exhibition at the Harriet Irving Library. Local art in celebration of Pride. On display until August 31.
Artists in Residence at Odell Park & Fredericton Botanic Garden: Kathleen Bunin, Tim Jones & Justin Sappier, Aug 19-30. Enjoy the last leg of summer by exploring the outdoors and your creativity! From Monday to Friday, artists are discovering the fauna and flora at the Odell Park Lodge and at the Fredericton Botanic Garden, giving free opportunities to the community to interact with their craft and nature.
Find Tim Jones and Justin Sappier on-location in the park and in the Odell Park Lodge every weekday from 9am to 5pm. As traditional wood carvers, this duo draws from their Norse and Peskotomuhkati-Wolastoqey cultures to tell stories and to educate their audiences through their art. Explore the art of eco-printing or botanical printing with Kathleen Bunin at the Fredericton Botanic Garden Resource Centre. From 2pm until 5pm every weekday, find Kathleen in and around the garden collecting plants and giving demonstrations on her techniques.
