A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.

Monday

Fredericton Arts Alliance Artists in Residence: Jennifer Wilson and Alex Good.

Local textile artist Jennifer Wilson and local composer Alex Good, will work on art projects from as part of the summer residence series in the Soldiers’ Barracks.

Jennifer Wilson, a recent graduate from the Textile and Fashion programs at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design, will be creating a textile art wall hanging that incorporates a multitude of natural materials, with a focus on the vegetation that grows on trees.

Alex Good released his debut album, Sapiophobic, under the alias “Good Badger” last summer. He will be creating a short collection of musical works that capture the dangers of climate change and the loss of trees to industrialization.

The studio is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Artists in Residence at Odell Park: Marla Lesage. From August 6 – 16, explore the work of Marla Lesage at the Odell Park Lodge. During her open studio hours from Monday to Friday, 1 to 5pm, discover her outdoor sketches and watercolour works turn into graphic novels and children’s books. Participate in a drop-in watercolour painting workshop on Friday, August 9 from 12:30 to 2pm. Bring your families to a comic-making workshop on Friday, August 16 from 12:30 to 2pm.

Tuesday

Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.

Fierté Fredericton Pride presents Queers n’ Quills at The Tipsy Muse Café. Featured local authors will read extracts from their work in celebration of pride. Free entry. Those under 19 to be accompanied by parents or guardians. 7 p.m.

Outdoor Summer Concert Series: Alex Bailey Swing Band. This free concert at Officer’s Square begins at 7:30 p.m. Rain Date: Wednesday, August 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday

Motown Downtown with Sugarbomb at The Capital. This 6-piece musical party has come together with a purpose to bring about the joyful revival of what is felt as the dynamo sound that impacted nearly everything during a Golden age of popular music – Motown & Soul. Comprised of some of Fredericton’s best musicians ready to bring all the soul and funk to you! 10 p.m. $6.

Music Runs Through It presents Hat Fitz & Cara at The Tipsy Muse Cafe. High-energy duo Hat Fitz & Cara are among Australia’s most talented roots music artists. Join us to see what all the fuss is about! 7:30 p.m. $20.

Hot Garbage Comedy presents Pride Comedy Night at Grimross Brewing Co. 8 p.m. Cover by donation.

Outdoor Summer Concert Series: 30 Years After (country). 7 p.m. Lawrence Amphitheatre (Nashwaaksis Commons). Free. Rain Date: Monday, August 19 at 7 p.m.

Thursday

Acadian Day Celebration in downtown Fredericton. Various activities in officer’s Square running from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Punk Pride at The Capital. Celebrate Pride Week with this hot line-up of bands from Halifax, Saint John, Toronto and China: Hell-Bent, Like A Motorcycle, Spill Your Guts, Dearly Beloved and Little You, Little Me. 9 p.m. $10.

Matilda the Musical at The Playhouse. Here come the Revolting Children! Inspired by the twisted imagination of Roald Dahl, with book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda the Musical is the story of an extraordinary little girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. An Impulse Production is a Fredericton Theatre Company comprised of community members drawn from the local professional, academic, and student theatre scene.  August 15-17. 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Downtown Gallery Hop. Head downtown to the heart of Fredericton and stroll from gallery to gallery to see some of the best established and emerging artists from across New Brunswick! Galleries include: Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Gallery 78, Gallery on Queen, George Fry Gallery (NBCCD), Charlotte Glencross Gallery (Charlotte Street Arts Centre). Free admission; all are welcome to attend.

Garrison Night Market. On summer Thursdays, Carleton Street in the Historic Garrison District comes alive with the Garrison Night Market! Each week features new vendors and entertainment! The market operates from 4:30pm to 9:00pm, June 20th to September 5th, 2019. 

Dillon Ryan and the Dream Romantic at The Tipsy Muse Café. Dillon Ryan is a New Brunswick based Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist. His band is currently based in Miramichi/Moncton. Ryan’s Music is often described as having a very British/European influence which corresponds with his family heritage in Northern England. 7 p.m. $10.

Friday

FM Berlin at The Tipsy Muse Café. Imagine if The Police and The Strokes had a baby…and you have FM Belin. 7 p.m. $10.

Jamie Comeau and the Crooked Teeth Album Release Patio Party at The Capital. Jamie Comeau & The Crooked Teeth are a collective from Saint John. With an alternative blues/indie folk sound, this 5-piece combine style, originality, personality, and stage presence to bring forth an unfamiliar sound that attracts attention from their audience. 9 p.m. $10.

Late Night with Snorkelers & Mrs. Hippie at The Capital. Do we have a banger night for you! Join the newly rejuvenated Snorkelers and the triumphant return of Mrs. Hippie. 11 p.m. $10.

Lansdowne House Concert: Jen Chapin Trio. Jen Chapin has been celebrated in the media for writing “brilliant soulfully poetic urban folk music” ever since her debut CD, Open Wide, in 2002. Nurtured in and around NYC by a large family of artists, writers, and musicians, Jen’s song writing has been described as “observant, lyrically deft, politically aware and emotionally intuitive”. Saturday

Under the Stars Film Series: Saturday Night Modern Favourites – Coal Miner’s Daughter (biography – PG-13). This free film screening in Officer’s Square begins at dusk.

Mo Kenny in Officer’s Square. Halifax musician Mo Kenny has been a headline performer at several festivals including Shivering Songs. See her on Saturday night in Officer’s Square for free.

Feels Good presents A Celebration of Woodstock at the Boyce Farmers Market. Feels Good will present Woodstock 50, kicking off at the Boyce Farmers Market and ending at the Capital Complex. Woodstock 50 will be a celebration of the iconic 1969 festival as well as the incredible local talent Fredericton has to offer. Tickets are $25 advance, or $30 at the door.  6:30 p.m.

Keith Harkin at Grimross Brewing Co. Keith Harkin is an Irish singer songwriter from Derry City Ireland now residing in Los Angeles CA. Over the last 15 years, his musical talents have brought him across the world from the UK to Canada to Australia to America and back. Including shows for President Obama at The White House, Sir Richard Branson on Necker Island, Secretary of State at the Pentagon, Mohamed Ali at Celebrity Fight Night and performing National Anthems at The Garden for The Boston Celtics, to name but a few.  8 p.m. $30-$60.

Hot Garbage Players present Much Ado About Rubbish & Intermediate Student Show at Wilsers Room. Celebrate the end of summer with this very special improv double bill! In Much Ado About Rubbish, we are reaching way back in ye olde bag of tricks to bring you a classic show! Join us as we uncover yet another lost Shakespearean text and bring it to life before your very eyes – all in definitely totally accurate old timey English! 7:30 p.m. $10.

Sunday

Pride Parade! Downtown at 1 p.m.

Ongoing:

Wabanaki Art, Tradition and Culture on Display at the Fredericton Region Museum. Fibre artist Carol Harquail and visual artist Patrick Nelson will be on site at the museum throughout July and August to showcase their art and interact with museum visitors. Guests are also invited to view the Wabanaki Way exhibit curated by Ramona Nicholas, Elder in Residence at UNB. The Fredericton Region Museum is located at 571 Queen Street, Fredericton and is open daily Monday through Sunday until August 31. For further information please call 455-6041.

Queer Identities: Pride Art Exhibition at the Harriet Irving Library. Local art in celebration of Pride. On display until August 31.
