Midweek Music Mix: Spotlighting New Releases from New Brunswick Artists

Category: music 91

This week we look at the latest releases from Kynduum, Marc à Paul à Jos and the first single from Papal Visit’s upcoming live EP.

Matt Carter

Kynduum – Zenith

The latest release from Kyndumm is a storm of electrostatic interference and shapeshifting whitenoise. Deep breaths of freeform melody and slow relaxing exhails of peaked signals carry through all three tracks until the final minute of the third track when the shift occurs and the tension breaks. Is this what Science Fiction sounds like? There’s a definite narrative locking all three tracks but as with music from any genre, it’s up to you to create your own storyline. Enjoy. Headphones recommended.

Marc à Paul à Jos – à Albénie à Charles à Syriac à Justin

Mandolins to the front of the line! On this latest release by Miramichi musician Marc LeBlanc, the mandolin takes centrestage as the guiding voice through thirteen tracks of Acadian folk and bluegrass. One of the stand out things about this release is LeBlanc’s decision to include one song sung in both French and English. Often overlooked as a way to simply add variety to a recording, this simple act of bilingualism is far more common coming from the province’s francophone music community than it is from us anglos (read as deep into that as you want).

à Albénie à Charles à Syriac à Justin is a rock solid roots recording.

Papal Visit – Prepare for Your Reversal

In advance of their upcoming live EP, Prepare for Your Reversal, Saint John/Halifax collective Papal Visit have shared the track, What Makes Him Win Like That, a track that originally appeared as a single in April 2017.

Born somewhere back in 2015 as a way for long distance friends Adam Mowery (Halifax) and Pierre Cormier (Saint John) to continue writing and recording together, Papal Visit has grown to become somewhat of a SJ collective, at least in the live recording lineup captured on this forthcoming release. Between Mowery, Cormier, guitarists Chris Braydon and Jason Ogden and drummer Geoffery Smith, this ensemble and their individual/collective pursuits can account for much of the defining music to come out of Saint John in recent years. And if you took a Three Degrees of Separation approach, they’d have the entire city’s musical output accounted for. No joke.

Watch for the full six-song EP arriving on June 28.
