A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Monday
Feast Media Presents Creative Jam: Film Series at The Ville. Here’s your chance to step into the exciting world of filmmaking. Join Joel Thompson and Kaitlyn Adair into a six-week journey to create your own short film. This workshop will focus on creating projects, producing them and then showcasing your work at a public screening in July. This workshop is appropriate for beginners as well as filmmakers who wish to experience different parts of the filmmaking process. You will have the chance to writer, act, produce, direct, operate camera, sound, do continuity, and learn the editing process. Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Abigail Lapell with Raine Hamilton at Grimross Brewing Co. Abigail Lapell sings haunting, gorgeous modern folk songs, mapping epic natural landscapes and deeply intimate, personal territory. Raine Hamilton’s ethereal voice and lyrics are at the forefront of these powerful and relatable tunes, written both in English and in French. 7:30 p.m.
Feast Reads: A Monthly Cold Reading Event at The Tipsy Muse. This is a monthly cold reading series where writers have their work read live for the first time in front of an audience. This is the perfect event for writers looking for instant feedback, actors looking to strengthen their cold reading abilities, creatives looking to connect with other creative professionals, and for patrons of the arts who love live performances while learning about what’s coming up in the community.
Cover is pay what you can ($5 suggested donation). Doors open at 6pm and the casting starts at 630pm (casting occurs on the spot, rolls depend on availability and performers). The Mothership at Wilser’s Room. Yup, that’s right! The Mothership is back to funk up all of your Wednesday’s in May in Wilser’s Room. Doors at 9 p.m. Show at 10. $6.

Thursday
The Fungus + Holy Crow Screen Door Tour + Chillteens at The Capital. Fungus will be returning to the Capital after their Flourish Fest set with their super talented friends Holy Crow both with new recorded music hot-off-the-mics. Fredericton’s Chillteens open the night. 9 p.m. $8.
Garrison Night Market Kick Off! Handmade goods, locally-grown farm products, craft brews, fresh food, live performances… All this and more at the Garrison Night Market. Every Thursday night (4:30-9 p.m.) from June 20 – September 5th downtown on Carleton Street.

Quinn Bonnell with The Heavy Steppers + Matt Comeau Band + Godfather K + Kelsey Arrow Music at The Capital. Enjoy four unique Indigenous artists, each with their own Individual style of music and background: from Esgenoopetitj First Nation, blues rockers Quinn Bonnell and The Heavy Steppers; also from Elsipogtog First Nation, singer-songwriter Matt Comeau Band; from St. Mary’s First Nation, upcoming rap sensation Kendin Aker (aka. Godfather K); and from Tobique First Nation, producer/songwriter Kesley Arrow Music. Please, join us for this broad spectrum of Indigenous Talent. 9 p.m. $8.
The Beach Bums: A Tribute to The Beach Boys at The Playhouse. The “beach party”, the cars, the sun, surfing, the endless summer…. this is what The Beach Boys music is. During the summer of ’98, six artists grabbed their instruments and talent to put together the ultimate tribute to The Beach Boys. The goal of the show is to recreate the magic and the essence of the 60s on the California beaches. The magic starts when The Beach Bums dress and act like The Beach Boys in their 60’s show with precision singing of over thirty Beach Boys original hits. No tracks are used, it’s all live. 7:30 p.m.
National Indigenous People Day Events at The Beaverbrook Art Gallery. The program includes: Solstice Ceremony with Sacred Pipe; Drumming and Dancing with artists from New Brunswick’s First Nations Communities; and a Presentation on the Wabanaki. This is a free event and no tickets are required.
House Concert with Miller, MacDonald, Cormier: Scottish Border Pipes. Ben Miller & Anita MacDonald are a magical duo that have become renowned across Canada and further afield, for their synergistic approach to traditional Scottish music. Blending Scottish Lowland pipes with Cape Breton fiddle, Gaelic song and step-dance, Ben and Anita join the threads of Old and New World traditions, while constantly exploring new ways to bring their instruments closer together. Cultural Expressions Festival at the Capital Exhibit Centre. The 11th annual Cultural Expressions Festival invites you to join us for three exciting days of entertainment from around the world to celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day. This year’s theme, Roots of Harmony, will feature Lebanese cultures and showcase over 130 dance and music performances, displays, food and family activities, coordinated by the Multicultural Association of Fredericton Inc, in partnership with Fredericton’s 17 ethno-cultural and community groups. June 21-23.
Bard in The Barracks 2019: A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Measure For Measure. Fredericton’s outdoor Shakespeare summer theatre tradition opens a new season this weekend with Pay-What-You-Wish performances of Measure For Measure on June 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Barracks Square and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on June 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Odell Park.
Saturday
Rob Moir + Tim Walker at Grimross Brewing Co. Toronto’s Rob Moir and Fredericton’s Tim Walker team up for a fantastic evening in the taproom. 8 p.m. $10.
BA Johnston + Janowskii + Outtacontroller at The Capital. BA Johnston returns to the Capital with a new album and the same set, with actual good bands Janoskii and Outtacontroller. 9 p.m. $10.
Peter F. Light at The Tipsy Muse Café. Ontario singer/songwriter Peter F. Light makes his Muse debut this month. He’s heard too much and loved too long to stick to one style of music. You’ll hear everything from the lively ‘30s to jazzy pop and even a touch a folk thrown into his writing. 7 p.m. $10.
