A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Monday
Paper Bag Singers at Christ Church Cathedral. All our (paper) bags are packed for our last sing together of the season. We’ll be Leaving on a Jet Plane, but don’t worry; we’ll See You in September. Think you can’t carry a tune in a paper bag? Together we all sound great! This is a group for people of all ages and singing abilities. No commitment, join us when you can. It’s only $5 for an evening of music and fun. 7:30 p.m.
Classical Piano Concert with Nathan Sargeant at Shannex Parkland. Nathaniel Sergeant has played piano for 17 years. While studying in Ottawa, he was employed as the rehearsal pianist and accompanist for a community theatre production of Beauty and the Beast, and since returning to Fredericton, has continued to pursue opportunities to share his music by offering solo entertainment for a variety of events and piano lessons. He has also worked as a choral accompanist for UNB Chorale and the Music Festival. Nathan is a delightful, engaging and extremely accomplished pianist. 2 p.m.
Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
2019 DOCTalks: Documentary Film Screenings & Talks in UNB MacLaggan Hall. The 2019 DOCTalks Festival is pleased to invite the general public to attend three free documentary film screenings and talks. For more information, including a schedule, HERE. June 11-13.
Wednesday
The Mothership at Wilser’s Room. Yup, that’s right! The Mothership is back to funk up all of your Wednesday’s in May in Wilser’s Room. Doors at 9 p.m. Show at 10. $6.
Christian Howse at Grimross Brewing Co. Christian is a singer-songwriter from Newfoundland who is making waves in the East Coast music scene. With four solo albums to date, his raw talent and dedication to his craft shines through his music and earned him a 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Young Performer of the Year. 7:30 p.m. $10.
Thursday
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder in the Tom Morrison Theatre. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is a murderous romp filled with unforgettable music and non-stop laughs. When the low-born Monty Navarro finds out that he’s eighth in line for an earldom in the lofty D’Ysquith family, he figures his chances of outliving his predecessors are slight and sets off down a far more ghoulish path. Can he knock off his unsuspecting relatives (with one actor playing all eight of the doomed heirs, who meet their ends in the most creative and side-splitting ways) without being caught and become the ninth Earl of Highhurst? And what of love? Because murder isn’t the only thing on Monty’s mind. 7:30 p.m. $25.
Mark Roberts and Ray Haines at The Tipsy Muse Café. Mark Roberts, swaps songs and stories with other noted NB songwriters in a four night series running every Thursday night in June at The Muse. Local singer/songwriter and popular morning co-host for 105 FM The Fox, Mark Roberts, grabs an extra stool and brings the songwriting experience to a whole new level of personal as he shares the stage with a handpicked selection of other songwriters from New Brunswick.
For night #2 in this four night series, Mark heads up river to Carleton County to tap into the talents of Ray Haines of Flat Top. 7 p.m. $10.
The Montgomery Street Band Album Release Show. Come welcome the Montgomery Street Band home from their month long, 28-show excursion to BC and back. The boys will be launching their new album ‘The Basement Bytes’ out of the solar system using a light sail. 10 p.m.
Friday
Adyn Townes with Poor Nameless Boy at Grimross Brewing Co. Fresh off his Canadian West Coast Tour, alternative indie-folk artist Adyn Townes will perform with Regina-based musician, Poor Nameless Boy. 8 p.m. $10.
The Royal Volts + Snorkelers + Columns of Clouds at The Capital. Dartmouth, Nova Scotia’s The Royal Volts hit the city this weekend with Halifax’s Column of Clouds and Fredericton’s Snorkelers. 10 p.m. $8.
Adam Washburn at The Tipsy Muse Café. Adam Washburn has hit the stage alongside several notable artists, including The Trews, Matt Minglewood, Christina Martin, Ria Mae, In-Flight Safety, Coyote, Gypsophilia and FM Berlin. A winner of four Saint John Music Awards, Music New Brunswick emerging artist of the year nominee and Music Nova Scotia’s Take it to the Tiki” third round winner; Washburn has performed dozens of shows across Eastern Canada, including a month long tour with “The Playdates” and with his band at Canadian Music Week 2015. 7 p.m. $10.
Beer, Beethoven and the Blues at Picaroons Roundhouse. Join us at Picaroons Roundhouse for an evening of great beer, great friends and fantastic music! Performers include local favourites pianist Mary Ogilvie, violinists Bianca Cruz, Helen Li, and Jazz Jones, a terrific 5-piece combo you may have heard performing every Saturday night at Brewbakers. This event will be live painted by four local artists and artists’ work will be auctioned! Local businesses have also donated several items for silent auction. 7 p.m. $35.
Saturday
Violet Hill: A Tribute to Coldplay at Grimross Brewing Co. A tribute to Coldplay’s incredible catalogue of tunes, spanning the past two decades, from the Fredericton-based musical collective, The Medicine. 8 p.m. $10.
Hard Charger Album Release Show with Little You, Little Me and Diner Drugs at The Capital. Easily the gruffest, most venomous band Canada has had since Kittens, Fredericton’s Hard Charger dispel any myth that the Great White North can’t blast with the best of them on this ferocious eponymous effort. Join the band in celebrating their new album Vol. 4 – Take The Guff and Suffer with two other champions of loud rNr, Little You, Little Me (Saint John) and Diner Drugs (Moncton). 10 p.m.
The Alex Bailey Swing Band at The Tipsy Muse Café. Bring your dancing shoes, because The Alex Bailey Swing Band is back this month for another incredible show at The Muse. For anyone who hasn’t been to one of these events yet, you’re in for a great night of swing music and tons of surprises. It’s a show not to be missed, and you will leave smiling. For this evening, we set up the band in a way that allows for a dance floor, and it will be bumping the whole night. 7 p.m. $13.
Scripts & Screens at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Grey Rabbit Theatre Co. in association with the New Brunswick Film Co-op will be hosting another Script and Screen event! This quarterly event is designed to engage writers and discuss the creation of their scripts. Film and theatre writers are welcome. Grey Rabbit Theatre Co. hopes to promote both film and theatre with this project. This lab series hopes to encourage productive discourse and ideas. 7 p.m. No charge.
Fillipino-Canadian CommUNITY of NB presents Heritage/Pamana at Fredericton Playhouse. The Filipino-Canadian CommUNITY of New Brunswick invites you to join them in celebrating their grandest and most vibrant heritage, history, and culture in an evening of dance and music. They welcome special guests Leander Mendoza, awarded Best Actor for his role as The Engineer in Miss Saigon, and international performer Nadia Moore, who has a singing engagement with the Royal Family of Brunei. This year local group NewComerce joins the line-up. 7 p.m.
Sunday
Siamsa Irish Dance presents A Wish upon the Moon at the Fredericton Playhouse. Siamsa Irish Dance presents A Wish upon the Moon, the story of a girl, a doll, and a dream come true. Inspired by the beloved tales of Pinocchio and Toy Story, this original tale will allow the audience a small glimpse into the captivating world of Irish Dancing and what it truly means to become a part of a dance family. 6 p.m.
