A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Monday
LHHS Lion King Competition at The Playhouse. An evening filled with fun entertainment, excitement and a lot of laughter is what is promised in this year’s edition of the Leo Hayes High School’s Lion King Competition. LHHS grade 12 male students will compete to take home the honour of being named the “Lion King”. This annual competition which is a Safe Grad fundraiser sees the candidates performing a choreographed dance as a group as well as individual talents in front of their admiring fans and the judges. Some of the talents are surprisingly good while all are very entertaining! There is a fashion show section of the Competition as well where the candidates get to “strut their stuff” while looking great in fancy clothing. 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Wednesday
The Mothership at Wilser’s Room. Yup, that’s right! The Mothership is back to funk up all of your Wednesday’s in May in Wilser’s Room. Doors at 9 p.m. Show at 10. $6.
Book Launch – The Great Trees of New Brunswick. Goose Lane Editions and the Conservation Council of New Brunswick will celebrate the publication of second edition of The Great Trees of New Brunswick. We will start the evening at 6pm with a guided tour to see some of Odell Park’s own beautiful featured trees. At 7pm there will be a presentation at the Lodge by the authors and photographer. Odell park Lodge. 6 p.m.
Great Canadian $10,000 Karaoke Challenge at The Capital Complex. 10 WEEK CONTEST: Weeks 1-8 are qualifiers with 2 winners selected each week! Week 9 is Semi-Finals where 16 winners sing-off!
Week 10 is Capital Complex Finals where the top 8 sing-off and the top 2 are selected to move on to the NB Regional competition representing the Capital in July. 8 p.m. Provincial Winners then receive airfare + hotel stay for the National Finals Saturday August 24th at Overtime Sports Bar in Kingston Ontario. Contestants must be at least 19 years of age to enter. Contestants can only compete at each location once but are allowed to travel to other participating locations to compete.
Thursday
Putting the Beaver Back in the Brook at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. This is a talk by Janice Wright Cheney. Inspired by the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Beaverbrook Art Gallery, this talk will begin by examining the historical, cultural and ecological importance of the beaver (Castor Canadensis). Images from contemporary art and current environmental research will illustrate the complicated relationship Canadians have with this iconic rodent. The artist will discuss her residency project (ReWild) and ongoing studio practice as a call for conservation and rewilding. Can we put the beaver back in the brook? 12-1 p.m.
Janowskii + Shadow Folk + Cactus Flower at The Capital Complex. Enjoy an evening of folk as psych-rock at Fredericton’s live music hotspot. 10 p.m. $8.
Just A Little Light at Wilser’s Room. Fredericton’s tribute to the Grateful Dead returns to the Capital Complex with special guest Ross Neilsen. 10:30 p.m.
Friday
Friday Night Comedy at the Tribute Bar & Lounge. The second in a new series of comedy showcases presented by Troy Haines Live Stand-Up Comedy takes place this Friday at 7:30 p.m. This week’s show is an open mic. If you’re an emerging comedian, this is a great place to test your material in front of a welcoming audience. And if you’re a comedy fan, what better way to start the weekend off?? $5.
Riversmoke at The Capital Complex. 70’s rockers Riversmoke make their Capital Complex debut this Friday with an evening of music featuring songs from AC/DC, Mountain, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, April Wine, Tom Petty, and more. 10 p.m. $10.
Lansdowne Concert Series presents Ross Neilsen. Ross Neilsen has played Lansdowne on three previous occasions and each time to a sold-out crowd. We are so pleased to welcome home one of Fredericton’s most famous blues artists. Ross has been and is currently a featured artist at Harvest Jazz and Blues each year. His shows are always highly energetic and passionate. He invariably is seen jamming nightly with other top-notch guest artists at Harvest. 41 Riverfront Way. 8 p.m. $20.
Romances for Cello and Guitar at Gallery 78. Please plan to join cellist Emily Kennedy and classical guitarist Steven Peacock as they present Romances for Cello and Guitar, a program which celebrates the many and varied expressive possibilities of music for this rare and evocative combination of instruments. You’ll hear music by Dowland, Vivaldi, de Falla, Villa-Lobos and Cordero, as well as tangos by Piazzolla and Marchelie, and original arrangements and compositions by Mr. Peacock in a number of folk and popular traditions. Admission is by donation; all are welcome. 7:30 p.m.
Saturday
Tragedy Ann at the Tipsy Muse Café. The award-winning music of Guelph folk duo Tragedy Ann inspires chills, provokes smiles, and reminds you to breathe. With the occasional nod to alt. blues and handshake with contemporary folk-rock, Liv Cazzola and Braden Phelan intertwine the storytelling power of Tom Waits with the musical nuance of Mandolin Orange, crafting something simultaneously familiar and fresh. 7 p.m. $15.
Fredericton Heritage Trust hosts Public Talk. Fredericton Heritage Trust will be hosting a free illustrated talk by Brent Wilson of the Centre for Conflict Studies/Gregg Centre on Fredericton’s British Garrison and the Military Compound: 1784-1869.The location will be announced in the May 23 issue of ARTSnews. All are welcome. 2:30 p.m.
Faith Healer + Kral Majales + Heat $heets at The Capital Complex. Edmonton’s Faith Healer perform headline Saturday’s lineup at the Capital with local supporting acts Kral Majales and Heat $heets. 10 p.m. $10.
Sunday
MonkeyJunk, Garrett Mason and Keith Hallett at the Playhouse. A triple bill of Canadian blues musicians, Monkeyjunk, Garrett Mason and Fredericton’s own Keith Hallett. 7:30 p.m. $40.87
