A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Monday
Mayworks 2019 Festival. This year’s festival features a book launch by Bruce Campbell, an artist pop-up gallery, poetry by El Jones, a film about migrant workers in Canada, labour history, skill-building workshops, a ceremony for workers who have lost their lives while at work, and much more. Festival goers will learn about the issues facing today’s workers including worker safety, migrant justice and Black Lives Matter. Learn more.
Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Demolishit Fest Fredericton at The Capital Complex. Hellfiend + To Whose Profit + High Anxiety + Hotel Murder and Gag Order. 9 p.m. $10.
Wednesday
Where Stories Meet Song at the Fredericton Public Library. The FHS Jazz Band, under the direction of Craig Woodcock, will be on hand to elevate and enhance a music themed story time. Everyone is welcome. 6:30 p.m.
The Mothership at Wilser’s Room. Yup, that’s right! The Mothership is back to funk up all of your Wednesday’s in May in Wilser’s Room. Doors at 9 p.m. Show at 10. $6.
Great Canadian $10,000 Karaoke Challenge at The Capital Complex. 10 WEEK CONTEST: Weeks 1-8 are qualifiers with 2 winners selected each week! Week 9 is Semi-Finals where 16 winners sing-off!
Week 10 is Capital Complex Finals where the top 8 sing-off and the top 2 are selected to move on to the NB Regional competition representing the Capital in July! 8 p.m.
Provincial Winners then receive airfare + hotel stay for the National Finals Saturday August 24th at Overtime Sports Bar in Kingston Ontario!
Contestants must be at least 19 years of age to enter. Contestants can only compete at each location once but are allowed to travel to other participating locations to compete.
Thursday
Max Amini’s Authentically Absurd Tour at The Playhouse. International sensation, world touring actor, host, and comedian Max Amini brings his highly anticipated tour to Fredericton. Through an array of eccentric impressions and novel storytelling, Max’s Authentically Absurd delivers a strong message about family ties, cultural trappings, and social topics. 7:30 p.m. $23.50 – $63.50.
Harmony Productions Presents Next to Normal in the Tom Morrison Theatre. Harmony Productions, in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association of New Brunswick’s Mental Health Week, is excited to launch their company with the captivating hit show Next to Normal. May 9-11. 7:30 p.m. with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. $25.
Joe Ross at The Tipsy Muse Café. Joe Ross is a Fredericton based artist who uses folk, blues and rock and marries it up with lyrics that move from the personal, political and mythical.7 p.m. $8.
Friday
Three Decades of Punk: 70’s-90’s at Grimross Brewing. Local musicians playing songs from the 70’s thru the 90’s in support of Living Roots Music Festival and Greener Village. 8 p.m. $10-$15.
The Fabulously Rich at The Capital Complex. The Fabulously Rich has come together to pay tribute to this monumental Canadian band, while at the same time, helping to raise money for the Downie Wenjack fund, making donations from each show they play. 8 p.m. $12-$15.
Saturday
Colin Fowlie at The Tipsy Muse Café. Hot on the heels of a brand new release, Colin Fowlie will prove why he’s one of NB’s most talked about songwriters. 7 p.m. $10
Les Païens in Wilser’s Room. Les Païens have crafted a blend of jazz, rock and electronic loop based music that crosses over into uncharted territory through improvisation. Hailing from the Moncton, New Brunswick, the jazz/rock institution of eastern Canada has been producing albums and touring for the past 24 years with noted performances at Montreal Jazz Festival, Evolve Festival, Francofolies de Montréal and Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton. 8 p.m. $10
Nashville Hurricane at The Playhouse. Following up on his wildly successful performance of 6 Guitars in 2016, skilled musician and actor Chase Padgett returns with a riveting new show. Nashville Hurricane is a curious tale of fingerpickin’ fury, following the story of a mysterious acoustic guitarist who appeared out of nowhere 40 years ago, conquered the music industry and then vanished without a trace. 7:30 p.m. $15-$30.
Celtic Jam at The Tipsy Muse Café. All trad musicians welcome… dancers, singers, skies the limit 🙂 Lead by Cape Breton Fiddler, Krista Touesnard, these sessions are great for participants and listeners…. come and try a tune or stay for the whole thing. 2-5 p.m.
