A quick run through some of the events happening this week in the world of art, music and film.
Tuesday
Open Mic Night at The Capital. Rich Gloade hosts this weekly event at The Capital. If you are a solo performer, a duo, or a band, stop by and try out a new tune in front of a very encouraging crowd. 9 p.m. No cover.
Symphony New Brunswick at Fredericton Playhouse. Michael Newnham returns as guest conductor to lead SNB and the Louisbourg Choir in everyone’s favourite Christmas treat: Handel’s Messiah. Vocal Soloists: Sally Dibblee, soprano; Heather Flemming, contralto; Owen McCausland, tenor; and Paul Bustin, bass. There will be a pre-show talk at 6:30 p.m. This show is SOLD OUT.
Wednesday
Reggae Party with Dub Antenna at The Capital. Fredericton’s reggae band Dub Antenna plays every Wednesday in Wilser’s Room. Doors at 9. Show at 10 p.m.
Noon-Hour Advent Recital at St. Paul’s United Church. This week’s performance will include Dr. Sharon Pond and The Vocal Collective. This recital will start at 12:10pm and conclude at 12:50pm. A freewill offering will be received.
A Christmas Time with The Ennis Sisters at Fredericton Playhouse. With multiple accolades, including a Juno Award and multiple East Coast Music Awards, The Ennis Sisters are world-renowned celebrated songbirds. Comprised of three talented sisters, the Newfoundland-based trio is known for their buttery harmonies and voices as powerful as the Atlantic. This special holiday performance features a range of songs, from classic carols to original tunes, which evoke the spirit of a Newfoundland Christmas. 7:30 p.m. $17-$34
Seasonal Music for Cello & Guitar at Wilmot United Church. Plan to join cellist Emily Kennedy and guitarist Steven Peacock for this one-hour recital, which features new arrangements of both familiar and lesser-known music of the Christmas season, as well as festive selections by Bach, Villa-Lobos, de Falla and Cordero. Admission is by voluntary contribution, with proceeds to support the Wilmot United Church Benevolent Fund. 7:30 p.m.
Thursday
Open Mic Night at Maybee Brewing Company. The latest open mic night in the city. Come strut your stuff. 7-10 p.m.
Carols at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Join Maureen Batt for a concert of Christmas carols celebrating the season! Enjoy Maureen’s talented and moving vocal performance, and sing along to holiday favourites. Kids can also join Christina in the Gallery to make holiday jingle bells to accompany the songs! 6 p.m.
A Fun-Filled Musical Comedy at The Delta. What do you get when you take the spirit of the season, wrap it in some cool rock melodies and tie it with all the holiday magic and wonder of your favourite childhood characters? A musical dinner theatre experience to celebrate all the traditions of the season! Join Charlie Brown, Lucy, Sally, Linus and a host of colourful characters for a remarkable holiday production of Good Grief, Where’s Christmas? With holiday charm and ticket prices even Scrooge would approve of, this musical comedy is a wonderful way to bring happiness and cheer to your favourite time of year! 6:30 p.m. $35-$65. Tickets
15th Annual Christmas Cover Shows at The Capital Complex – Part I. Enjoy performances by Wangled Teb, Panda Bee, Young Satan In Love, Colin Fowlie and others performing the music of Weird Al, Lady Gaga, Joel Plaskett and many more. Doors at 7:30. Show at 8 p.m. $12 – $10 with a non-perishable food item.
Friday
The Hypochondriacs at The Capital Complex. Fredericton’s alt-country sweethearts take to the stage Dec. 21. Come out and see for yourself why this band took home so much hardware at the 2018 Music NB Awards. Doors at 9. Show at 10 p.m. $10
Saturday
Measha Brueggergosman’s Christmas for my Hometown at Fredericton Playhouse. Join Measha Brueggergosman as she comes home to Fredericton to celebrate the holidays and the strength of her hometown. The multi-award winning star will perform uplifting spirituals from her ECMA Award-winning album, Songs of Freedom, as well as some Holiday Classics. This performance will get you out of your seats and singing along as Measha embraces the spirit of the holidays. No matter what religion you follow, or if you don’t follow one at all, it is all about coming together as a community, as a family, celebrating strength and love. Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. $44.50
Feelsgood XMAS Market 2018 at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Feelsgood invites you to join them for an afternoon of local crafters, live music and craft beer as part of their annual last-minute holiday pop-up at the Charlotte Street Art Centre. 10 – 4 p.m.

Feels Good Christmas Party at The Capital Complex. Come out and party with performances by Jamie Comeau & Crooked Teeth, Jerry-Faye, Kylie Fox, Tampa and several others, plus hang with some of the nicest folks around. Doors at 7:30. Show at 8 p.m. $15 – $13 with a non-perishable food item.
