River Portraits in Oils
The Garrison District will welcome two oil painters July 23 to 29, and visitors will have a chance to see how different artists approach the same subject.
Fredericton High School student Vanshika Khaitan and professional visual artist Matt Watkins will work on separate oil paintings of the river in Casemate #11 of the Soldiers’ Barracks.
Khaitan will create a large oil/acrylic painting to capture the beauty and history of the river in hopes of bringing its history and origins to the public’s mind. Visitors will also be able to add their fingerprints to the piece.
Watkins, who own Earthforge Jewellery and Symbiosis Fine Art, Inc., will work on a two by three foot painting, featuring the river, bridges, and Fredericton skyline. Visitors will get to ask questions about the painting and the practice.
The artist residencies, organized by the Fredericton Arts Alliance, encourage visitors to interact with the artists. The studio is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
